Nightmare of a Kitchen

So I figured since I’m stuck at home because of the #snowmageddon or whatever you want to call it, I could at least write something to entertain those who are stuck at home as well and tired of hearing about school closures and snow forecasts. I have recently been binge watching Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares on BBC America. If you haven’t seen it, he visits failing restaurants, rips apart the food, the décor, the staff, the menu, etc. He then proceeds to try and give the restaurant a makeover with new food and a new image. I do prefer the British version much more because it’s not as outlandish and as over the top dramatic as the American series. However, it seems like the American version is always on, and at the very least it’s entertaining. It’s kind of like a train wreck; hard to turn away when Ramsay is tearing a failing restaurant owner a new one.  Who doesn’t like a good before and after makeover anyway? It’s why other shows such as Bar Rescue and Restaurant Impossible are so addicting. I would love for Gordon Ramsay and Jon Taffer of Bar Rescue to go head to head, it would be television gold. The Jerry Springer Show of the restaurant industry. Anyway, of course after watching each episode, I had to check Google to see if the restaurant was still open. Not surprisingly, more than 60 percent of the restaurants Gordon Ramsay has tried to rescue in the United States are closed. It makes you realize how truly difficult it is to open and run a successful restaurant. Why did I choose this profession again? Since I had some time on my hands, I did a little data collecting on all the funny shit Gordon Ramsay repeatedly says. I wrote down a list of words he commonly used, and then took a tally as I watched each episode. The sample size was around ten episodes; there were 77 episodes in 7 seasons of the show. Kitchen Nightmares would make a great drinking game. Every time he says bloody hell, drink. Every time he says unbelievable, drink. Every time he says oh come on, drink. You get the idea. Try it out on your next day off. Just use the handy graphs and data below. Another show I have started watching recently as well is The Million Dollar Critic, also on BBC America. The show follows British food critic Giles Coren as he explores the restaurant scene in America and Canada. He visits 5 restaurants in each city with the goal of giving one restaurant his glowing critique. He’s witty and sarcastic, someone you’d like to grab a drink and dinner with. If not for anything else, watch because of his extreme distaste of hipsters, it’s hilarious. He really does not like them. He should stay away from downtown Raleigh then. Now if I can only find someone who wants to pay me to eat and write. Well it’s time to brace myself for the impending snow. Cheers foodies.
